The Latest on PMADs & Maternal Mortality
Recent writing on postpartum mental health, the Duxbury case, and feeling "touched out"
Big week for writing about PMADs (perinatal mood and anxiety disorders):
Writer Stephanie Fallon featured my forthcoming book and an article I wrote for Slate in her recent essay, “How I Coped With Feeling ‘Touched Out’ As A New Mom.” When I first started exploring this social phenomenon, nearly every article on the subject said the same thing— it’s normal and it passes. Those writing about the distinct feeling of physical and psychological overwhelm didn’t often link it to PMADs, and only vaguely to breastfeeding. Even today, feeling “touched out” is not really taken seriously as one in a catalogue of feelings that present under the broad umbrella of PMADs— feelings like anxiety, rage, depression, overstimulation, agitation, lack of energy, and more.
