Misandry & Motherhood
Taking man hating seriously… yes, I’m isolated on a farm writing
This week has been great. I’m away in the country at a residency in Petaluma finishing edits on a book I hope to tell you all more about soon. For now, I’ll just say that while I envisioned lots of hair pulling this week, I’ve instead been writing mostly in peace. Here’s why:
One of the books I read for research this week is I Hate Men, by Pauline Harmange, translated from French by Natasha Lerner. This little book (really, it’s a slim one, more of an extended essay) caused a huge uproar in France when it was first published. Someone at the French Ministry for Gender Equality (ha!) even tried to get it taken off the shelves.
I figured the book would either been cheeky or furious, and it is a little bit of both, but overall, it’s kind of neither? Harmange takes the work of hating men seriously.
