On Love is Blind this week, Johnny and Amy, an otherwise lovely couple, continued their unreasonably diplomatic standoff about birth control. Johnny wants Amy to get on the pill. She suggested a vasectomy. He considered it, but now he feels like surgery sounds really serious. Amy doesn’t want to disrupt her entire endocrine system. Who do you think will win this one?
Johnny is sweet, thoughtful. He’s a good guy. This is the no drama couple. He admits he’s “uninformed”! They even discussed male birth control pills, but Johnny pointed out that they’re pretty under-researched and he doesn’t want to be a “lab rat”—what if there are long term health risks! What if it hurts!
Johnny admitted he has never really thought about his role preventing unwanted pregnancies, because every woman he knows has been on birth control. Gotta say, it’s a little stark watching this amid the increasing criminalization of pregnancy in the US—including the Alabama Supreme Court ruling that embryos are people, creating more legal and medical chaos, all in service of surveilling and further harassing women!
Oh to be a young man who has literally never even had to worry about an unwanted pregnancy, much less the myriad side effects of birth control in a society that already presumes women to be hormonal hysterics who can’t be trusted to account for their own suffering—much less the consequences of actually getting pregnant accidentally, such as, you know, having your basic humanity, medical rights, autonomy, and full citizenship stripped upon conception.
