Author Salon: Soraya Chemaly

On writing refusal

Soraya Chemaly is a journalist, activist, and author. Her book Rage Becomes Her argues that women’s anger is not only justified, it is an active part of the solution. In the book, she considers how anger is a vital instrument, a radar for injustice and a catalyst for change— and she explores the gendered social and cultural policing of women’s anger as a tool to limit and control women’s power.

Her most recent book, The Resilience Myth, similarly digs under the surface of our cultural presumptions, this time those around grit, growth, and trauma, arguing that our modern understanding of “resilience” protects a corrupt status quo and that true resilience comes from community and connection.

We chatted about the long history of refusal, the relationship between anger and creativity, problems with resilience agendas, trad wives, male supremacy, being the killjoy, finding feminist community, and much more.
